THAT PETER BREWER

Put your own mask on first

Well hasn’t this been a fascinating week!  And its just beginning!

Chances are that we’re friends or connections somewhere in social media or in real estate, or you’re in small business in some way.

And if you’re in real estate or small business, there’s a better than even money chance that your world has had its axis tilted a little left of centre in the last few days.

Many of us are entering this new world with a sense of unease, trepidation, and possibly just a little touch of fear about what’s next, and what each of us need to do to keep our businesses afloat.

40 years in business, be it as a Salesperson, a Real Estate Principal, an Exec Chairman of a National Franchise Group, and current Chair of a prominent industry institute, has taught me a lot about business and leadership. That vast experience at each level carrying out each of those roles has taught me that they all have two things in common.

  1. It can be incredibly lonely, and
  2. you need to be in good mental shape to lead properly

Leaders need to put their own masks on first

It wasn’t the most comfortable thing i’ve ever warn. But I’m the leader. I need to be fit to lead.

Loneliness as a leader can be tough.  The pressure for some when under pressure like many are encountering this week can be crippling.   Knowing who to turn to for advice, who to bounce your crazy 2.00 am ideas off, and having a trusted confidant to chat with to double check that you’re on the right path is critical while you navigate these uncertain times.

This week i’ve been fielding calls from clients asking me for guidance questions ranging from:

  • How do I keep existing team members occupied and productive?
  • How and what should I be communicating to my Clients, Landlords and Sellers?
  • What do we say to Buyers who may be nervous about the market conditions?
  • What can I do during these changed conditions to future-proof my business and to ensure we come out the other end of it, better prepared, leaner, tighter, and more unified and focussed as a team?
  • What are the emerging tech tools we should be exploring now that will reduce costs, increase mobility, generate productivity, and give us an edge over our competitors.

Now more than ever, your business needs fit leadership.  Put your metaphorical mask on and be fit to lead.

Your team needs leadership and you need to be fit to lead.

Your people need certainty and a clear sense of where you’re heading that ship of yours.

Your team will respond positively to understanding clarity around their roles, even if current times require that you need to change some of their roles.

Take your team on the journey. Paint the picture for them. Be crystal clear on the destination and the waypoints you’ve created on the way.

Times like this ain’t for the faint hearted, but with the right guidance and a clear direction, we’ll all come out the other end better, stronger, richer, more prepared, focussed, and even more united.

If you think you’d benefit from the help of someone who has sat in a chair just like yours in troubling times, then let’s chat.   Whether you need full blown business support, or just a hand navigating some of the individual challenges and or reaffirming your path forward, to your team, i’d be delighted to have a chat about how I can help you keep that metaphorical mask.

What’s critical is that you’re in peak mental condition. It’s mission critical that you put your own mask on first and that you’re inhaling clean air. We need our leaders to be crystal clear in their decision making.

Need a hand making those critical decisions? I’m on 0417630962 or email peter@thatpeterbrewer.com and I’m here to help!

In the meantime, stay safe and keep that mask on.
